I have a thing with Mohawks. It was kind of a problem there for a while, nearly. To my great happiness, my brother has even gone through several mohawks himself. The funny thing with Mohawks is, they break every rule they make. Not all Mohawks are shaved on the sides, or even trimmed short. Not all Mohawks are completely sane sometimes. Not everyone’s Mohawk looks like the types I’m about to show you, but they are all variations on what you see here. But first, a teeny history lesson.
The name ‘Mohawk’ originated from the Native American tribe, part of the Iroquois confederation, The Mohawks. The Mohawks are one of the indigenous tribes that inhabited what is now the Mohawk valley of upstate New York. The hairstyle was first noted by a French explorer in the 1600s, and was quite prominent in various Native American tribes. Strangely, some cases suggest the hairstyle was never traced to the Mohawks themselves. Other sources claim however, the hairstyle was strictly used to look fierce during battle. And fierce it must’ve looked, considering the tribe itself never once gave themselves the name Mohawk, but rather it was a name their enemies gave them. In their own language, the Mohawk people call themselves Kanienkehaka, which means "people of the flint." Their Algonkian enemies gave them the name Mohawk, meaning, “Man-eaters”.
Leave it to the Punks to popularize a hair cut meaning “Man-eaters”.
Now without further ado, Presenting, the three branches of Mohawks.
Liberty Spike Mohawk

Mohawks with triangular-like spikes, classically down the center of the scalp. However, the spiked liberty Mohawk can take many forms, from asymmetrical, less organized spikes, short or long. There’s a great video for styling a classic liberty Mohawk, here.

Deathhawk

If Punk + Goth = Deathrock, then Deathrock + Mohawk = Deathhawk, eh? People with Deathhawks usually have a lot more hair than other Mohawk parents, due to the varieties in style the Deathhawk offers. Lots of teasing, lots of backcombing, lot’s o’ awesome. Photo credit Chayla Von Impaler on DA & Razor Candi
FauxHawk

Fauxhawk either refers a) to the haircut worn primarily by men where their hair is gelled at the top, and the sides are short(er than the top) b) the hairstyle worn primarily by women when the sides are pinned and/or gelled back, and the longer pieces and bangs are pinned into a pompadour-looking concoction atop one’s head. c) A hairstyle in which the top layer is styled into a mohawk, without having any hair cut. Some longer-haired faux-hawk parents have really great mohawks, and still manage to keep the longer bottom layer of their hair.
Undercut

The undercut has only one rule. A least one portion of the hair on your head is extremely short. It can be exposed or covered, it can be on both sides, it can be on one side. It can have designs shaved into it, it can be dyed. But an undercut it is. An undercut is what I myself have!

Undershave

The undershave is an undercut, but it’s shaved (usually) bald. In many cases of undershaves the hair is left long enough to cover the shaved portion if desired. Basically, it's any hair cut with a shaved portion that cannot be styled into a mohawk.

Side Burns / Girly Burns
In Mohawk talk, these are the little pieces in front of your ear that you can decide to leave long when you’re getting the other portions cut. Some people leave them longer, others cut them triangular, others angle them to point toward their chin, some gel them down. Girly burns, are obviously, the girl talk of sideburns.

Fauxhawks... I hate those things. They're mostly just for people who want to seem edgy every once in a while (like spray in hair colour or gel). Although, a lot of those jocks who want to be all alternative and cool just get proper mohawks.
Can you tell I have strong feelings about people playing dress up with alternative culture? lol.
Someday... someday I will have a tri-hawk. That would mean growing my deathhawk out, though.
I love this post :) I love how deathhawks look, I think they're the best of all the choices given and undercut is awesome but I just can't bear to cut any of my hair so short so shaved is most definately out. And I agree that fauzhwaks are just too overly popularized now. They've lost their appeal to certain cultures because of how mainstream they've become.
Maybe someday I'll be able to commit myslef to a "hawk" of some sort but right now I'm just to committed to growing my hair out longer though the deathhawk holds great appeal...
I actually like them all, especially Undercuts and Deathhawks. My mother even found a way to do "bunhawks" of a sort for braided/twisted hair. That's probably as close to any sort of 'hawk I could get to with my hair...
@Maeam
I've seen some things like that, but I would love to see a picture of how you do it!
I have an undercut with "girly burns" \m/
I don't really like fauxhawks. I mean, I sort of understand when it comes to needing a less edgy look if you go to work. But please, save it for the hispters :-P (Nah, I'm cool with 'm. Just cannot see myself having one).
@Ashlee: Really? The jocks in my school have really short hair slicked to the front, and the front of their hair is lifted up a tad. It looks like a strange cap/hat :-P
That was very interesting, thanks! I wish I had the guts to try some of these haircuts :).
I like girls with fauxhawks. I saw an adorable girl with a very-long-in-the-front fire engine red fauxhawk that was absolutely awesome on her. I also think it is a "gateway drug" hairstyle for people who are finding their innner alt (i.e. people who were shy/under pressure to conform who are slowly growing into their own). Nothing wrong with that. I really like all these styles but I find some of the more extreme ones are sort of...hmmm...overused. It's like "I don't have a unique personal style so I'll get liberty spikes/deathhawk/etc to get me attention/alt cred." *shrug* Just my opinion. At the same time, if you love a mohawk/fauxhawk/etc you should rock it even if it is popular because that's what YOU like. You'll still like it and rock it once everyone has moved on to the next trend.
i would love for this to include some pictures of Dreadhawks (a Mohawk made of dreadlocks)
i myself have dreadlocks with bangs of regular hair, and one side of my head shaved with Chelsea bangs(girl side burns). eventually ill have a dreadhawk
Anon, sorry for the late reply, but I will include that for you.
Thanks for reading!
